I'll spare the details, but metal ladle + glass jar = big hole in the side of glass jar and all 2 gallons flooding onto my hardwood floors, spreading quickly to the living room where it drenched my new white/beige shag. (what a sad way to start a housewarming party! Luckily the party was still a hit). Replaces One Smell With AnotherThe vacuum bag on my Hoover is large and lasts a long time. That's good because the replacement bags are expensive, but bad because after a month or so the bag begins to smell which means while vacuuming I endure the stench of the vacuum bag escaping and the sound of Mrs. Spudman complaining about the stinky vacuum cleaner.Rather than do a premature evacuation of the bag, I use Arm & Hammer Odor Eliminator as a stopgap measure. I learned quickly that the Odor Eliminator has a very powerful aroma of its own, so one should use this product in moderation. Don't shake it over an entire carpet! I use just enough to mask the vacuum cleaner bag smell, a remedy that keeps working for quite a few days after.One thing that's nice is that the Arm & Hammer's consistency is not powdery, but more of a grainy, sandy nature. This is good because a powdery product tends to clog up the vacuum bag, necessitating a change.Used in moderation, this product will do what...
Don't Buy This Stuff!
This MIGHT be an odor eliminator, but you cannot tell because the odor it creates is so strong! It is making our throats prickle. It is awful. And, as it says, it is "Long Lasting" so you are stuck with the strong perfume.
Do not even think about buying this
The smell after using this is horrible. I vacuumed multiple times and put a new bag in the vacuum after the initial run but the smell would not go away. It gave me headaches and I had trouble sleeping. After two days I hired a professional carpet cleaner to get rid of it. I can't believe they even make this product.

Good but with problemsThis is my second Hoover, the first one didn't survive lending it to my girlfriend. She took it apart to clean it and never could get it back together again. Oh well, it was about 20 years old and probably would be fine if I were to fix it.As for this one, it works as well as the first one. I just cleaned my beige carpet which hadn't been cleaned in at least 5 years. It looks almost new. Also I've been doing some landscaping and had tracked a lot of mud across the carpet and you would never know.I also used it to clean my ceramic kitchen floor and it did a pretty good job. It didn't get a few small spots (got most of them) where spills had been on the tile for a long time and it didn't get the grout between the tiles. To be fair, in the past I had clean those spots with a scratch pad and the grout had to be cleaned with a brush. Still, it was much faster and did a better job than I achieved by hand. I didn't use the squeegee because the grout lines...
Fantastic Unit
I recently purchased the Max 77 to clean a bonus room that had been heavily soiled by kid and dog traffic. The unit performed much better than the unit I typically rent, a Rug Doctor. I am extremely impressed by how well the unit cleans. The unit is easy to clean and the dual dispenser, separate soap and water containers, is a real plus. The unit is a great deal easier to operate then the Rug Doctor and the wide stance saves time and effort. While I typically do not endorse products, this is an exception. The Hoover MaxExtract 77 saved me the expense of replacing my carpet, a feat that I thought would be impossible to accomplish.
Awesome carpet cleaner
I spent several weeks researching different types of carpet cleaners, and was actually aiming for a bissel when I looked this product over and opted for Hoovers the much easier two container (holds way more water=less time filling and emptying)unit. I got this product during a sale at Kohls, and it's brilliant. Assembled in minutes, and was cleaning my carpets 20 mins after getting home. I noticed the brushes weren't turning, so I took out the dirty water dispenser and noticed the arm that controls the brushes was vertical. I moved it down, and voila, the brushes work fine now. The speed control doesn't appear to make that much of a difference in rotations. I don't use it anyway.Clean up is super easy, and the soap mixer/dispenser is a very welcome addition. The power surge really does do a surge, lol, the first time I overdid it a little, and spent some extra time getting the water up from the carpet. Go for the dual brush insteadUPDATE: APRIL 2010: I uploaded some photos of my sweeper. Bissell neglects to show us how the underside of the sweeper looks.I have had the sweeper for about 4-5 months. I use the sweeper for picking up bedding (Carefresh) for my guinea pig and his little poos under the futon. I also use it for little scraps that fall on the floor. It does it job and cleans on the surface but obviously will not replace a vacuum as it does not have suction.QUALITY - 4 STARS: Sturdy except for the handle, the handle is put together by three pieces that you twist together. The brushes are made of thick nylon so they don't rip out easily.EASE - 4 STARS: Great, since there's no electricity involved, there's no cords to deal with. It's better used for carpet. I do use it on my tile kitchen floor but sounds like it's scraping it and possibly scratching the floor. Great for cleaning up in between vacuumings
I bought this sweeper to sweep my basement carpet, which is dark in color and shows every bit of fuzz. It does a reasonable job cleaning, transforming my carpet from "Does she ever vacuum?" to "Oh, she must have vacuumed yesterday". It doesn't get all the fuzz and crumbs, but it does what I'd expect from a sweeper. It is also much lighter than my vacuum, so I'm much more likely to use it.My three-year-old daughter enjoys using it too. She insists on sweeping her own room (I won't complain).The main thing I've learned is that, because the handle slides together, it will not consistently support the weight of the sweeper head. This means that if you pick it up or suspend it by the top of the handle, the sweeper will probably fall off, so pick it up near the sweeper. (It stays together fine when actually sweeping.)
Great for college students!
This is an awesome product to have in an apartment! I am a college student and do not particularly enjoy cleaning. But with this BISSELL sweeper, you don't have to plug it in or worry about the sound at all. It's perfect because it works on both carpets and wood floors, so only one unit is needed for both surfaces! Definitely worth buying!
How do I clean carpet without a machine?
I just moved into an apartment that has really dirty carpet in the living room. I'm too poor to get it professionally cleaned or to rent or buy a machine. Is there any really cheap way to clean it myself without a steam cleaner machine?
It's called elbow grease.
You need to know what sort of carpet you are dealing with. It may well be cheap, so that isn't a problem.

I removed the carpet and most of the tape, but their is still tape and glue on concrete.
