Very good machine
If your new machine LEAKS, see note #2 below. I am just amazed at how many people write that their machine leaked from day one, and they returned it. It will leak if you skip a crucial one-time set-up step.Paid $170 at Best Buy. This is my first carpet cleaner so I have nothing to compare it to except my own expectations. Even though the name is SteamVac, like all the others in this class of cleaners, there is no Steam to it. That's just false marketing, but all the manufacturers do it, so no particular knock on Hoover.First, let me say I'm ashamed to admit that our carpet hadn't been cleaned in 4 years, and that we live in the country where lots of dirt gets tracked in from outside. So the carpet was pretty darn dirty. The Hoover F5914-900 did a very nice job the first time I used it - a drastically noticeable difference in the appearance of the carpet. The water in the dirty water receptacle was black. Did it return the carpet to new condition? No,...
Slower than the pro machines, but cleans just as well
The Hoover F5914-900 SteamVac with Clean Surge works astonishingly well for a consumer carpet cleaner. There are some limitations and some gotchas; I'll tell you about both. There's a 2-page "Quick Assembly Guide" and a 40-page manual. If you want your assembly guide with pictures and few words you'll like the QAG. If you prefer verbal instructions, turn to pages 4-6 of the manual; I wish I'd started there first. (It takes me longer to figure out "Store Hose" with four illustrations showing a hand in various steps of the process than to understand the eight sentences that accomplish the same instruction.)There's no heater in the "SteamVac", so make your gallon of water VERY hot for best cleaning. And prepare your carpet for cleaning before filling the tank with these two steps: (1) vacuum thoroughly; and (2) pre-treat heavily soiled or grease-stained areas. The vacuum in the SteamVac is designed to suck up water (which it does very well), but will only...
Great cleaning
The F5914 really cleans carpets well. On my worst carpet area, the cleaner did as well as a commercial carpet cleaner. I recommend the following to make it a successful cleaning:1) I supplement the hot water with some boiling water to really get the temperature up. By the time the water hits the spray nozzle, it has really cooled off so make it hotter. Bissell uses a heater, but it can't be that powerful without reducing motor power. Best to supplement.2) Patience. Go slow and go over really bad areas. You will HAVE to pretreat and hand wash heavy stains, but so do the pros. Don't expect a diamond out of coal. You still have to do the work.3) Clean often. I have one carpet that I waited way too long and it just won't come clean. The pros can't and I can't. BIG lesson learned there.Have fun with this. I can't believe how much dirt there was in my "clean" areas, so it will be great to have this around to clean when I desire to. I saved more...

This house is clean!!!
I had the older version of this machine. I bought it about 6 years ago and after attempting to clean the rugs last month I realized it was no longer picking up the water. Opened it up and saw that the internal suction hose had split in half. That was it .. time to find another cleaner. I have had good luck with Hoovers but did a TON of research before settling on this machine. I have a dog and a toddler and both do a number on my rugs. Juice, food, crayons, spit up, urine and everything else under the sun has ended up on my carpet in the past 2 years. I did not take care of my previous Hoover so it wasn't the best in its later life. I just brought the new one home and oh my god, the water was black. I did not think anything could bring my carpets back but this did. They are so soft and clean. I love this machine because it has a rinse button if you want to make sure you have gotten all the soap out. I use really warm water and the machine directs hot air onto the carpet as...
THRILLED with this purchase!
Ten months ago we bought $7000 of new light-colored carpeting. Two months ago we got two new puppies and one new shelter dog (none of which were housebroken), in addition to our other three dogs (one of which is a senior citizen and becoming incontinent). We live in an area with coyotes and mountain lions and we cannot leave our dogs out at night.Needless to say, our new carpet took a huge, devastating hit while we all adjusted to our new life together. On top of all that, we live in a rural mountain community and the amount of dust and dirt and mud that blows in and/or gets tracked in is astounding, no matter how careful we try to be. I thought a few rooms of carpeting might not be salvageable. So my Mom's Day gift to myself was the Hoover F7412-900 SteamVac Dual V Widepath Carpet Cleaner with the Hoover Pet Formula Detergent. O.M.G. My carpet looks and smells absolutely brand new. Stains and odors that I thought might be in the carpet permanently all came out...
Best carpet cleaner I've ever used
I just got this carpet cleaner from Amazon.com and I am so happy with it. It outcleans everything I've ever used before, including professional cleaning companies. I owned a Kirby years ago and it can't hold a candle to this Hoover cleaner. I found it was much easier to use than the rug doctor, which I've rented many times, and since I own it, I don't have to haul it back to the store and I have all the time I want to clean my carpets. It was very easy to use, and I particularly like the clean water rinse feature. It gets all the detergent residue out, and my carpet was soft and lofty after cleaning. Just think, you wouldn't wear your clothes washed and not rinsed. The power is awesome, my carpet was practically dry when I finished. I got back very close to the amount of water that was dispensed. My carpet was dry enough to walk on in an hour and vacuum in 2 hours. This machine is so well made that I look forward to having soft clean carpet for years to...

Get the Hoover SteamVac, You will LOVE it!!!
How do I love my Hoover SteamVac? Let me count the ways... This carpet cleaning machine is FANTASTIC. As soon as I got the SteamVac, I cleaned some incredibly filthy areas on beige carpet. One was a major stain in a high traffic area that someone trampled into the carpet, while bringing groceries in with wet and dirty shoes. The other was an old stain my daughter made from a spilled chocolate-soymilk smoothie that she didn't clean up properly because she was in a rush to go somewhere. The SteamVac cleaned both of these problem spots to such a respectable level that I won't be embarrased in front of company anymore. This is an older carpet, so it doesn't look brand new. But, that doesn't stop me from jumping for joy.Incidentally, I don't use the expensive, petroleum-chemical-based carpet cleaning solutions. Instead, I use water and a little bit of the nontoxic 'Lemon' SimpleGreen in the solution tank. I also worked on problem spots with a toothbrush and a squirt bottle...
Great product for the price
So I discovered that this is pretty much the exact same model as the more famous It has the clean surge as well, which does great with pet urine.I think the only difference is that it's packaged with a small bottle of the cleaner for Pets and some wipes. As far as I can tell.I've been using it almost every weekend. I get down and smell the spots afterwards and only a few times did I still smell it. I used the clean surge and it did the trick. We also live where there's new home construction and I suspect we have a lot of 'construction dust' in our house. Apparently we do and for new carpet it's amazing how brown the water is! It picks up sand that I didn't know was there.Still fairly new so we'll see how it ages, but so far so good. I bought a few extra gadgets for it...
Doglover
This is a great carpet cleaner. The scrubbing brushes is what sets it apartand above all the other types. Easy to use. A bit heavy to push back andforth but well worth the effort. This machine worked on spots that aprofessional carpet cleaner couldn't budge. Fantastic for all stains andgreat for those pets stains that happen when you least expect it. I use mysmall SpotBot Pet for those little stains but this is the machine to use forbigger stains and just to freshen and brighten up the carpet. Apparentlythere is also an attachment that you can buy that will enable the machineto clean floors too. I intend to get that but for now, it is well worth thecost and effort.

Buying this wastes more money than the cost of the item!
This is positively THE WORST home cleaning product purchase I have ever made in my entire life! DO NOT BUY THIS unless you are planning to throw away your carpet, especially if it's light-colored. I thought some new technology had been invented that allowed soap to be dried on and then vacuumed up. But a few days after using it, there were even bigger & nastier stains than before. HORRIBLE PRODUCT! Between all the water, time, and effort expended to get my carpet clean in the spots where I used it, this thing is STILL costing me a fortune. Months later and after 2 self-cleanings, I am still rinsing soap from my carpet.
Great job on spots
This is not a shampooer. This is a toy. It is not even electric. I was fooled. I hope you won't be.

Why Pay More?
Bissell has proven itself the leader in carpet cleaning systems for years. So I ran out to rent a carpet cleaner which we needed immediately due to a monster spill. All the rentals were rented out! + It costs $$ to rent. + And who knows whats left over in those machines. So I made the decision to buy one to have in just such an emergency. Great decision. Why buy an expensive Bissell for over $250 when this 1622 Powerlifter Powerbrush can do everything they can. It's got the brushes it's got the power. The only real difference between those models is that they heat up the water for you. Well can't you just pour hot water into the resevoir? Yes you can. And away we go.I made this wise economic puchase some months ago. This machine has proven itself reliable strong and able time after time. The ultimate weapon for all sorts of messes.. . . . .. And yes it cleans alot better that the store rental units.Oh and by the way we did try that little...
very pleased
I rely on this little cleaner to keep up with pet stains. I could not be happier. It cleans, it picks up the water nicely, it's quiet and it's an inexpensive option. The water container is easy to operate, it sits right down with a tight seal, it's easy to carry. This is a very nicely designed, inexpensive cleaner.
Good cleaner - as long as you don't have dirty carpets!
After three cleanings of two area rugs - I wash them once a month, the nozzles that squirt cleaning solution plugged up. Checking the internet we found that clogged nozzles are a common complaint - and not at all easy to unplug. We called the Bissell company, who put us through some tests (have a screwdriver handy when you call the customer service line!) and recommended we take it to a local repairman. The Bissell- recommended repair person quoted me $89.95 to clean the machine and get it running again. Cleaning and belts are not covered under Bissell's warranty - making the warranty effectively useless.I had had a Bissell with a heater and an upholstery brush that lasted several years. I had hoped that the machine would be more durable without the heater - but I guess not. Now we're in a quandary over what to buy the next time, and I'm depressed over buying a rug cleaner that would only work for three times on two 5x8 area rugs!

Carpet shampooers...?

Family of 5 and a dog that sheds a lot (a pug).. Looking for a shampooer that won't clog or break so easily (especially due to dog hair). I vacuum prior to shampooing, but still end up with a pile of dog hair stuck in my shampooer... Any input/advice

You first need to get a vacuum that deals with the dog hair. Even the most expensive carpet shampoo machine isn't made to deal with that. I have 3 dogs and 4 cats and the Bissell Healthy Home vacuum works great on the pet hair. It's got a different

I then tried over by the carpet and rug area, where we had purchased said rugs some years back. I looked first in the cleaning materials area, which I located after discovering that it was no longer located near the sign that said "Cleaning supplies". Then I tried by the actual carpet shampooers and steamers. It is a sunny, dry day and thus Tom was moved to have us shampoo the large rugs in the dining and living rooms. Kohl's did not have rugs large enough for the dining and living rooms. (I thought we got them from Kohl's, but that was the rug in the library. There were some cleaning products, but no Bissel Etc. Sadly, a thorough search online and of the area print events listings showed nothing particularly attractive....
