A practical guide from someone who knows.
I like this book. Lots of pictures, insider tips, and a no nonsense approach to cabinet building. The author gives it to you straight. He uses pocket hole joinery in abundance. Why? Because it takes less time, joins strong, and is reversible if you want to correct something. He doesn't go for a lot of complex joinery that is very time consuming, and not what the customer cares about. Myself I want to also build some heirloom quality cabinets. You know dovetails in every drawer corner. Inside panel solid wood overlays. Dadoes throughout, with hand rubbed finishes. You know the works. This is not about that. If you want to get practical and build fabulous looking hand made cabinets for a living, or for yourself, and not spend a month or a year doing it, this is the book for you. Instead of using plastic laminated interior panels, with fake wood, like the home centers sell you, you can use cabinet grade veneer plywood instead. This book will show you how. Great Overview But Flawed Formulas...
This is a good book for someone with good basic woodworking skills who wants to do a kitchen cabinet addition or modification but needs some help with design concepts unique to kitchen cabinetry. Unfortunately, you cannot rely upon all the formulas given in the book. Here are some examples:On pages 60 & 61 the formulas to determine rail length and panel height for raised panel doors are both incorrect due to a simple error showing a subtraction operation instead of an addition. Now that I've discovered these errors I've got a much lower level of confidence in other formulas used to determine part sizes--especially for those parts that I'd rather not cut too short!The publisher's website doesn't have a forum for discussion or posting of comments/errors. I could not locate the author's Email address or website.All-in-all this is a good book for illustrating concepts and describing shortcuts. FANTASTIC introduction to building face frame cabinets
I did a lot of research prior to building my own kitchen cabinets earlier this year and this book was what inspired me the most as Udo's Schmidt's cabinets are simply BEAUTIFUL encompassing many custom details like: mitered corner returns, beaded inset face frames, raised panel doors/drawer fronts, dovetailed drawers and arched mullion glass upper cabinet doors.He basically sold me on the KREG pocket hole jig as he explains quite thoroughly the ease by which you can use it to not only screw together the face frames, but also to screw the face frame on to the cabinet carcase and also to screw together drawer boxes. Schmidt also covers how to use biscuit joinery to help with aligning the bottom edge of your face frame to the bottom of the cabinet so that you don't have an annoying ledge scraping your arm when cleaning or getting objects out of the cabinet. His coverage of making the mullions for arched upper cabinet doors is worth the price of the book alone! I would caution...

Excellent book/DVD for the weekend warriors out there
Outstanding book and DVD outlining all of the necessary steps in the design and construction of kitchen cabinets. I have most of the 4/5 and 5/5 star books Amazon offers on this topic, but for a weekend warrior this is the one to have. However, don't just take my word for it, go to Google Books and type in 'Gregory Paolini' and you'll be able to review a nice chunk (approximately 20 pages) of his book to see if it's for you.Oh, incidentally the disc that accompanies this book is surprisingly good, in fact I think it's well worth the 'price of admission' all by its lonesome. If by the off-chance there's something in Mr. Paolini's book that has you stumped just pop in the disc and have the author walk you through the steps in video format. If pictures are worth a 1000 words then I have absolutely no idea how many words this DVD is worth.

I like the DVD
We are looking to build new kitchen cabinets in the not too distant future, so in addition to a week long cabinet building class in Indiana, I have been acquiring various books on cabinet building. I like how this book lays out the process step by step. I also like the DVD that accompanies the book. However, unless you are looking for an instructional book on building cabinets with nothing but pocket holes and staples this probably isn't the book for your. I'm not saying that the cabinets demonstrated in the book are inferior just that the only fastening discussed was using staples followed by pocket screws. Just my opinion.

Simple and straight forward
This is an actual book on cabinets, not your typical this is a saw (no kidding) and this is a hand cut dovetail joint. If you want practical info this is the book for you. If you want to build high end cabinets this also is a great base to start from.

Excellent instruction using modern materials and methods
Modern materials and methods means particle board and particle board screws with solid wood face frames and solid frame and panel doors that overlap the cabinet opening, and modern hidden hinges and modern european plastic feet and modern drawer slide hardware. If you want to optimize the look of your kitchen with minimum cost, this is the book for you. Step by step, very good writing, solid construction teaching. If you're into more traditional frame and panel construction using solid wood and/or high grade veneered plywood, rabbet joinery, mortise and tenon joinery or dovetail joinery, butt or knife hinges with flush fit doors, then this book is NOT for you. This book will teach you how to build cost effective cabinets using modern techniques and modern materials and it will teach you very effectively.

Yes, the example cabinets are UGLY...
but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater!The late Danny Proulx was an EXTENSIVE contributor to cabinetry schools and magazines for many years before succumbing to a heart attack at a woodworking convention, but his passion lives on in this wonderfully simple and comprehensive book.If you want to learn how to build high end custom cabinetry with all the nice details then look at udo schmidt's or jim tolpin's books. If you want to learn the basics to building a solid face frame cabinet with raised panel doors or frameless cabinets, this is an amazing introduction into the world of cabinetry as the author not only describes the steps but also gives you ACTUAL DIMENSIONS for both 5/8" and 3/4" materials for cabinets that are in the standard 3" widths. Not many people realize the merits of proulx's hybrid face frame/frameless cabinet which enable you to save yourself a lot of grief and pain in attaching european hinges and drawer slides to the cabinet sides...

Buy this book!
If I could give more stars, I would. I've never built anything out of wood before, and I just finished building all my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I did not use melamine (the author is a fan of this material), as it would not be good for resale value in my particular area. I used polyurethaned birch plywood for the kitchen cabinets, and painted MDF for the bathroom cabinets. Using the author's instructions, they turned out very well, with very little hassle. The author has a no-nonsense approach to building cabinets (e.g., using screws in a butt joint, rather than time-consuming dados/rabbets). This saved me a lot of time and hassle. Since I was a beginner when I started this project, it was especially appealing. Certain other books were overwhelming to me because of the amount of space dedicated just to joinery. I've nothing against these other methods, but it was refreshing to see that they weren't actually necessary. Given the limited amount of time I had to build...

Good do it yourself
I'm sorry this book is out of print, I've kept it out of the library for 3 renewals. Although it is old, perhaps a bit outdated, I wonder why we don't find many of the ideas in ready mades today. The plans are excellent, and I'm going to move ahead and try to build my own kitchen cabinets.

Comprehensive & Insightful
The illustrations and detailed explanations were extremely helpful. It was also helpful that the author explored techniques that could be used to get the same results even though they weren't necessarily the techniques he used. By "offering several different ways to get to the same results" it allowed me to use the tools and materials I was most comfortable with. A definite read for anyone interested in building there own beatiful kitchen cabinets.

Top of the stack
Excellent job! I've highlighted and dog-eared this one. It stays with me (literally) every minute of the day. Jim Tolpin is very conversational (if you read my reviews you'll find this an ever-present requirement). "Building Traditional Kitchen Cabinets," holds the coveted position next to Danny Proulx's "Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets." Danny still pushes MDF as a useful product for cabinetry--the only thing I totally disagree with. Jim Tolpin gives it some mention, but not an endorsement. If cabinets are in your future, I recommend both books without reservation. Just disregard, completely, any and all reference to MDF--...
