How To Use Dehumidifier - News

Energy Adviser: Keep energy use low when you're away
To deal with the problem, West recommends using a dehumidifier, which does not use much power, to keep things drier. Newer dehumidifiers will do the job even with interior temperatures as low as 40 degrees, he said. “As long as there's not a lot of air

Keep Indoor Air Fresh This Winter
Also, try limiting the use of humidifiers and set up a dehumidifier in damp areas inside the home, especially the basement. Good quality insulation can help regulate temperature, moisture, and overall health by preventing mold growth in the home.

Home Fires Spur Reannouncement of Recall of Goldstar and Comfort-Aire Humidifiers

Don't last, warranty practically useless
I bought mine at the local big-box home improvement store. It is used in my heated basement, which I want extra-dry as my firearms and other sensitive items are stored there. After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave "room temperature is too low" as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation. This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months.Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality.By...
This dehumidifier does the trick

Works like a sponge--but needs a modification for hose drainage
This unit sucks water from the air by the gallons. I set it up in my finished basement and right out of the box it worked great. So well, in fact, I needed to empty the large capacity tank too often. So I opened up the back hose valve, connected a short garden hose and pointed it to the floor drain. The unit kept filling up the tank and did not drain out the hose :-(. It appears that the hose drain in the back just works on gravity--there's no pump. So if the floor is not level and/or if the hose is a little narrower than the male connector on the back of the unit (as most are) the water will not drain through the hose the valve. The fault is poor product design. To remedy, I bought a right-angle PVC adapter, barb adapter and clear tubing (to visually see whether it was working) from Flex PVC.com. Parts: "508-007 FGH by .75 FPT (female NPT) 90degree", "PPN46 3/4 mpt x 1/2 barb adapter", and "1/2 x 5/8 Clear Tubing BTF". The right angle adapter is large and maintains the 3/4"...

Initial impression was outstanding... but time has proved me wrong...
UPDATE 05/19/12 - I attempted to disassemble the unit yesterday evening, but the bucket would not come out, and there was a silver dollar sized patch of ice on the outside of the unit near where the gravity drain nozzle is on the interior. I turned off the unit and left it to thaw overnight. This morning, I went down and removed the housing and everything appeared to be normal. So, I reassembled the unit, but left the left hand hold insert out, so I could see inside the unit. I plugged it in and let it run for several hours, and it became apparent that what is happening is that the defrost function is no longer working (which is the same problem that my previous dehumidifier developed), so ice is forming and blocking the drainage through the elbow that either drains into the bucket, or the gravity drain hose, depending on if the drain hose is connected. The design of the unit is such that, if the normal drain path is obstructed, there is an "overflow" drain hole on the opposite...
Effective, quiet, well-designed
This is my newest Sunpentown dehumidifier. I got my first (an SD-60E) almost 2 years ago. I've used many home dehumidifiers (Hampton Bay, Maytag, Fedders, Amana, Whirlpool) over many years. My two Sunpentowns are the most effective by any measure. Their water buckets are bigger, yet need to be emptied as often or more, even when used in the basement where temperatures are lower and many dehumidifiers lose effectiveness. I can now keep my whole house under 45% with only two dehumidifiers where I used to need three. Also, they're quieter, which is very important. At first I worried that they occasionally seemed to run unnecessarily, but I now realize they're smart devices and sometimes move air (with compressor off) just to monitor it better. They don't need to be reset after a power failure. The filters are easy to remove and vacuum. Also, readings are more accurate than on older models. One very minor complaint: I could wish for a pause button (off for an hour, then...
Great product
I purchased SPT SD-65E 65 pint dehumidifier in October after my home was nearly flooded. The water came up to within 5 inches of coming into my house. All of my insulation and ductwork had to be torn out. Under my house had to be sprayed 3 times with clorox mixture to prevent mold. I knew there was a lot of moisture inside my home. The first week I used the dehumidifier, I emptied the tank 14 times in SIX days. The humidity level is now maintained at a steady 45 to 50%. It is efficient and very quiet except when it goes into defrost mode. I am using it now in conjunction with my gas logs to control the humidity level. I am very pleased with the operation of the Sunpentown SD-65E. I have reccommended it to many people since I received mine. Thank you for such an efficient product. Jack Jarvis, Washington, NC

Does exactly what it's supposed to.
I live in a coastal region that receives high levels of moisture and humidity on a daily basis. To top it off, my house has bathrooms which have no ventilation, so we've often had to deal with mold problems. The answer to my problems arrived in the form of a small box-shaped dehumidifier called "Eva Dry".This device works tremendously well, pulling moisture out of the air at a reasonable rate. The 16oz reservoir takes about one week to fill up, when I leave it running constantly. I use it in my bathroom mainly, but once in a while my bedroom will feel damp, and it handles the 12'x14' space just as effectively as it does the bathroom. My only complaint is that it's not nearly as quiet as I thought it would be, and the power cord is kind of bulky for bathroom use; I have to tuck it all away someplace, and my only outlets are on the counter, so that's a bit aggravating. The product loses one star for that.I recommend this to anyone who has ventilation...
appealing concept, failed execution
fan is not quiet enough to run all night in bedroom.Dehumidifying a bedroom is a problem - If you get a typical dehumidifier, the compressor is so loud that you can't run it at night. So you only run during the day, and hope things aren't too clammy by morning. The Eva-Dry sounds promising: By using a thermoelectric cooler, it avoids the noisy compressor, and thus offers the potential to run all night without the noise problem.Unfortunately, the fan on the eva-dry is so noisy that you can't run it all night, and the cooler is so weak that even with two of them they don't dry the air enough to just run them during the day. So it was a of no use to me.This product is *only* useful for dehumidifying a *very* small area (closet, bathroom) that is *very* humid. Many of the reviews said this very thing, but I took a chance that two of them would accomplish something. The loud fan was an additional unpleasant surprise.Thumbs up to Amazon...
Perfect for small bathrooms
I bought this for the small bathroom attached to our bedroom. We have paneling on the walls and was horrified when I discovered small mold spores growing in one of the creases of the paneling. We have an exhaust fan, but unless we run it all day, it's not enough. Our inspector recommended opening the window during our showers, but I can't handle a cold draft during my shower. So.....this was the perfect solution. Within three days, the tray was almost full. We leave the door to our bathroom open and cannot hear the unit running at night. It really is very quiet. I've already thought of taking it downstairs and using it in a closet that has a musty smell to see how it works. Just a fantastic product for such a compact size.

Continous Drain Does Not Work As Advertised
I putchased this unit as it was specified as having three features I wanted in a basement unattended dehumidifier a) auto restart on power failure b) continous gravity drain and c) automatic defrost. When I received the unit and hooked up the continous drain hose the unit continued to fill up its bucket and auto stop when the bucket filled up. I checked several times to make sure I had hooked up the auto drain as per istructions which were very straight forward. Finally convinced I had hooked up the hose correctly I called Danby customer care in Toronto. Got through to them very quickly. The person I spoke with explained that, yes, this model was having " manufacturing problems" and many units were not auto draining, but they were working on a "fix". He offered to take my name and mail me the fix as soon as it was out. When I asked him how long the fix has been worked on and when it would be available , he responded " for several months" and " any week now". Well not willing...
Lasted one summer and is Noisy
Warning. I purchased a Danby dehumidifier after excellent consumer report reviews and research. It worked GREAT for one summer. But by fall I noticed this thing wasn't working as good. I saw less water being drawn out. I thought it was because temperatures were dropping in Chicago, so I packed it up for the winter. Well spring comes and it didn't work at all. I called Danby and they stated to send it to a local shop. I searched for days to find a shop. Most companies stated it just takes too long to get parts from Danby and they stopped doing repairs. After calling Danby again, I found a shop in North Chicago area, I live in the south suburbs. So I packed this heavy piece of machinery, yes it weighs about 80 pounds, in my CUV and fought traffic on the Dan Ryan. Got a call back a few days later stating the warranty wasn't valid and it would cost around $150 to repair. Luckily the owner was legit and stated that these things never last long. He gets many complaints and he...
Danby is a QUALITY product
I spent a lot of time doing research about dehumidifiers online, and also reading articles about many brands.I ultimately settled on this Danby 70 pint unit, and that was most certainly the right decision.I have a 2400 sq ft Cape Cod style home with a full basement.Although we live higher up on a hillside, there are some minor hydraulic water problems in the soil immediately surrounding the concrete foundation. When there is a considerable amount of rain, we occasionally get small damp spots, or in the case of a rainstorm, puddles coming up from the floor, as well as a musty odor.My old, heavy dehumidifier worked well enough, but was somewhat costly to run from an energy standpoint. This unit was well thought out, extremely well designed, works perfectly, is fairly quiet (my old unit sounded like a B737 at takeoff) and has the best overall reputation. This unit is light enough to maneuver around, and has a handy see through tank level indicator...

Very positive review after a year (edited)
I received this unit yesterday so this is a preliminary assessment. The reason why I needed a dehumidifier is the one that we have in our basement is literally 20 years old. It's so old, it doesn't have a piece of plastic on it but it refuses to die. While I didn't test the old unit for electrical draw, my monthly electric bills are too high. I unplugged/put on a timer every appliance that I thought could contribute and it came back down to my belief that my old dehumidifier is an energy hog.Our basement is HUGE but I still only bought the 30 pint unit because I'd rather run a small unit more often than cycle a larger unit. Same concept as a house air conditioner - and a dehumidifier is a miniature air conditioner. Besides, I'd need the Mother of All Dehumidifiers to completely dry the basement and that's not going to happen.Even though the old unit had just been running before I installed the Soleus, the new hstat read 70%. I don't really care if that's...
Great Product
I received this dehumidifier a few weeks ago for use in my basement apartment that had gotten damp with all the rain this summer. It has been running non-stop since. It works great! I have been rotating it around the apartment into different rooms that need to dry out and it quickly fills up with water after a few hours beeps and I empty the bucket. the only drawback is that is does give off a lot of heat, which I guess all dehumidifiers do, but I still gave it 5 stars!
the little dehumidifier that could
this little wonder does a great job. I use it in my 20x40 man cave and it keeps it very dry. It is a little noisy for my taste and when we are occupying it I usually shut it down becuase of the fan noise. Also if it is running the room temperature rises a few degrees over the week. We like it when its 67-68 degrees and if it is on all week the temperature stays around 71. I attached a garden hose to it and it has worked flawlessly over last month.

How to keep the environment dry and clean, instead of using dehumidifier?

Well, I would say we should start by recycling stuffs. Like clothes for that matter !!!

how much electricity does a dehumidifier use?

Sep 11, 2011 by mum of little boys | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

Is a dehumidifier expensive to run like an air conditioning unit?

Not near as much - unless it is connected to a central AC and it is a whole house dehumidifier/souped-up air cleaner.

I suggest you read the label on the dehumidifier that you want to use. It will tell you how many watts it uses. Just compare

Energy Adviser: Keep energy use low when you're away

06.10.11
“Homeowners can even turn the power completely off, if they have someone in the area who will regularly check on the house, and turn the heat on a bit if the weather turns really cold, say into the 30s. Heat is the biggest energy expense during winter, so turning the heat to 50 degrees is the best way to cut the power bill. To deal with the problem, West recommends using a dehumidifier, which does not use much power, to keep things drier. As fall weather begins to coast into winter chill, many Northwest residents head south to warmer and sunnier climates to avoid the worst of the season. On a sunny winter day the outside temperature may climb as much as 30 degrees from the overnight low while the house remains cold inside, West said. “The idea is to lower the inside temperature as much as possible,” said Bob West, energy counselor at Clark Public Utilities. While unoccupied houses may still use some power, there are many ways to reduce your electric bill while you are away.

One of the most advantageous Dehumidifier for the House

Source: Events by Red

In exploring the consumer reviews of numerous dehumidifiers on Amazon, I created a decision to determine on the Frigidaire 70-Pint Dehumidifier, design FAD704TDP. Best dehumidifier Reviews - Lately, my 15+ calendar year old dehumidifier decided to surrender the ghost. With this dehumidifier, it is genuinely probable to preserve the humidity in my basement continually all-around 50% to 60% (or even reduced, dependent on basement size), which can reduce the above talked about difficulties. The 70-Pint designation just isn’t the dimensions of the bucket, but somewhat, the quantity of water vapor that the dehumidifier can clear away via the air inside the solitary day. Now, without having a dehumidifier, it only will take quite a few days earlier than you’ll start to note light rusting on the tools inside the basement workshop....
