Initial impression is outstanding...
UPDATE 08/09/11 - Bad John requested an update... so here goes... after 4 months, still very satisfied. During the colder months, it never really did go much lower than 48% when the temperature was around 60 in the basement, it got down to around 45% RH and that was as good as it could do. Although 45% humidity at 60 degrees was certainly acceptable. For the past few weeks we have had outdoor temperatures running between 80 and nearly 100 degrees with beastly humidity (at least for the northeast). My basement has been in the mid to upper 70's and I have the control on the dehumidifier set for 45%. It is currently 75 degrees and 40% humidity, at least according to the thermometer/hygrometer sitting on the shelf 3 feet away from the unit. The unit cycles off and on rather frequently, but it does not run continuously, although that is obviously a very subjective observation that would be influenced by outdoor and indoor temperatures, RH, rainfall, and water infiltration into the...
Effective, quiet, well-designed
This is my newest Sunpentown dehumidifier. I got my first (an SD-60E) almost 2 years ago. I've used many home dehumidifiers (Hampton Bay, Maytag, Fedders, Amana, Whirlpool) over many years. My two Sunpentowns are the most effective by any measure. Their water buckets are bigger, yet need to be emptied as often or more, even when used in the basement where temperatures are lower and many dehumidifiers lose effectiveness. I can now keep my whole house under 45% with only two dehumidifiers where I used to need three. Also, they're quieter, which is very important. At first I worried that they occasionally seemed to run unnecessarily, but I now realize they're smart devices and sometimes move air (with compressor off) just to monitor it better. They don't need to be reset after a power failure. The filters are easy to remove and vacuum. Also, readings are more accurate than on older models. One very minor complaint: I could wish for a pause button (off for an hour, then...
Great product
I purchased SPT SD-65E 65 pint dehumidifier in October after my home was nearly flooded. The water came up to within 5 inches of coming into my house. All of my insulation and ductwork had to be torn out. Under my house had to be sprayed 3 times with clorox mixture to prevent mold. I knew there was a lot of moisture inside my home. The first week I used the dehumidifier, I emptied the tank 14 times in SIX days. The humidity level is now maintained at a steady 45 to 50%. It is efficient and very quiet except when it goes into defrost mode. I am using it now in conjunction with my gas logs to control the humidity level. I am very pleased with the operation of the Sunpentown SD-65E. I have reccommended it to many people since I received mine. Thank you for such an efficient product. Jack Jarvis, Washington, NC

This dehumidifier does the trick

Don't last, warranty practically useless
I bought mine at the local big-box home improvement store. It is used in my heated basement, which I want extra-dry as my firearms and other sensitive items are stored there. After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave "room temperature is too low" as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation. This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months. Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality...
Works like a sponge--but needs a modification for hose drainage
This unit sucks water from the air by the gallons. I set it up in my finished basement and right out of the box it worked great. So well, in fact, I needed to empty the large capacity tank too often. So I opened up the back hose valve, connected a short garden hose and pointed it to the floor drain. The unit kept filling up the tank and did not drain out the hose :-(. It appears that the hose drain in the back just works on gravity--there's no pump. So if the floor is not level and/or if the hose is a little narrower than the male connector on the back of the unit (as most are) the water will not drain through the hose the valve. The fault is poor product design. To remedy, I bought a right-angle PVC adapter, barb adapter and clear tubing (to visually see whether it was working) from Flex PVC.com. Parts: "508-007 FGH by .75 FPT (female NPT) 90degree", "PPN46 3/4 mpt x 1/2 barb adapter", and "1/2 x 5/8 Clear Tubing BTF". The right angle adapter is large and maintains the 3/4"...

Continous Drain Does Not Work As Advertised
I putchased this unit as it was specified as having three features I wanted in a basement unattended dehumidifier a) auto restart on power failure b) continous gravity drain and c) automatic defrost. When I received the unit and hooked up the continous drain hose the unit continued to fill up its bucket and auto stop when the bucket filled up. I checked several times to make sure I had hooked up the auto drain as per istructions which were very straight forward. Finally convinced I had hooked up the hose correctly I called Danby customer care in Toronto. Got through to them very quickly. The person I spoke with explained that, yes, this model was having " manufacturing problems" and many units were not auto draining, but they were working on a "fix". He offered to take my name and mail me the fix as soon as it was out. When I asked him how long the fix has been worked on and when it would be available , he responded " for several months" and " any week now". Well not willing...
Lasted one summer and is Noisy
Warning. I purchased a Danby dehumidifier after excellent consumer report reviews and research. It worked GREAT for one summer. But by fall I noticed this thing wasn't working as good. I saw less water being drawn out. I thought it was because temperatures were dropping in Chicago, so I packed it up for the winter. Well spring comes and it didn't work at all. I called Danby and they stated to send it to a local shop. I searched for days to find a shop. Most companies stated it just takes too long to get parts from Danby and they stopped doing repairs. After calling Danby again, I found a shop in North Chicago area, I live in the south suburbs. So I packed this heavy piece of machinery, yes it weighs about 80 pounds, in my CUV and fought traffic on the Dan Ryan. Got a call back a few days later stating the warranty wasn't valid and it would cost around $150 to repair. Luckily the owner was legit and stated that these things never last long. He gets many complaints and he...
Doing an excelent Job
This unit cost more than my other choices, but I have had my previous dehumidifier for over 30 years and I thought energy consumption was going to be a significant part of the cost. The unit appears well made, is easy to carry around (although heavy) and the humidity controls are simple. When on a hard surface, the unit is easy to roll about. I do not use nor expect to use the timer function or the remote control. The unit came in half the time promised, and I was able to install it before departing on a trip. The setup was easy and the instructions adequate. I use the drain rather than the bucket. I like the way the drain is solidly attached to the unit rather than to the bucket. The hose is an unimpressive plastic unit but I think the attachment is a standard bib thread so I expect if there is a problem I can attach a standard hose. The display is easy to read but a little awkward as it displays five items with only two displays. The...

Works great!
I installed this unit in my basement about 8 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since. Things I noticed: If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.) If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit. I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didn't think of that. Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out it's out forever. If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.) I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well. The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting. Has three fan...
Works well
I purchased this dehumidifier for mainly basement use, but wanted one quiet enough for use upstairs if needed. And, boy is this thing quiet. My refrigerator is louder. I also own a Fedders 45 pint unit and a Whirlpool 65 pint noise maker. The Fedders (Maytag) was the quiet champ untill I purchased the Soleus Air CFM-40E. The Whirlpool removes an amazing amount of water, but can be heard UPSTAIRS when running in the basement. So it is used only when needed. The Soleus Air is so quiet I have to go down the basement stairs and visually check to see if the unit is on. Can't say that for many dehumidifiers. My only complaint is that the fan is always on, even when it has reached the set humidity level. This prevents the short cycling the others do, on for 2 minutes off for 2 minutes or so, but I think prevents an Energy Star certification. At 2.9 amps it draws significantly less than the Fedders 5.6 amps and the Whirlpool's 7.9 amps. The Soleus Air works great (so...
Excellent balance of efficiency and effectiveness
I currently have 5 dehumidifiers in different locations, and this one is the strikes the best balance of efficiency, reliability, effectiveness, and quietness. There are other models that can pull more moisture out of the air more quickly, but they are invariably much louder and MUCH more expensive to run.

Mixed review: lowers humidity very well, but NEVER turns off
We purchased this unit for a very wet basement in a old house (read: standing water during spring snow melt and heavy rains). After making major drainage improvements in the basement (perimeter drain pipe and sump pump), we wanted to further dry it out so we could store things down there without worrying about mold and mildew. This unit does a very good job at lowering the humidity. After only a short while of use, there is a noticeable difference. The unit is easy to set up and very easy to use. There is only one MAJOR drawback. The unit does not shut off when the desired humidity level is reached. Ever. The condenser does turn off, but the fan runs indefinitely. There is a timer that the user can set to have it turn off after some specified number of hours, but how useful is that?? One of the features we liked was the EnergyStar rating -- however, we just received our highest electric bill in the 10 years we've been i this house after having the unit running...
Continuous Drain problem and Responsiveness
Overall, I am very pleased with the efficiency of the unit to remove humidity, to not freeze up. I have had problems with other units freezing up. This unit is extremely quiet which is a blessing. Some other issues explained below, although remedied, are troubling. I purchased this unit in May of 2009. I first noticed that the fan apparently runs 24/7 whether or not it is calling for the compressor to dehumidify. I emailed Danby and waited a week. No response. I emailed again and was told that yes, the fan runs continuously but uses little power and helps keep the area constant. Then after the continuous drain working fine for a couple of weeks, I found the container filling and having to be emptied. I checked the connection, it was fine. I emailed support and heard nothing for over two weeks. I emailed again, and the email bounced back. I then tried calling 800 support number off and on for two days, and it was busy. I then called the main number and talked...
Beware Danby dehumidifiers
We bought model DDR3008EE in 6/08 . It worked well at first, but in Fall 2008 ate a lot of power, and its anti-icing function appeared to stop working. We didn't use it over the winter. We turned it on in 7/09 and found its coils would not cool. Other than the fan blowing air, it was totally non-functional. A local shop confirmed that the coolant had leaked out. It took many calls to Danby just to finally get a human being instead of a machine. The man told me Danby couldn't help us as the 1 year warranty had run out. We paid $242 for this piece of junk. We won't ever buy a Danby product again.

GE ADER65LN 65 Pint Capacity Dehumidifier, R-410A Refrigerant, 17.5 Bucket Capacity, 3 Fan Speeds

Source: 50 Pint Dehumidifiers

According to our Kill A Watt, 60 pint GE uses less power and consumes less energy than the Whirlpool 50 pint, despite having a higher capacity card. FWIW, the compressor consumes 65 watts GE fan at high speed and the speed of 60 watts, low, change the proper functioning of the compressor on all the ground (68 dB weighted C-3 feet) to the compressor hum (67 dB), so that the selection of... Excellent and quiet Janomee2 In our large basement that had a Sears Kenmore that did a good job, but died after seven years, which is reasonable, dehumidifiers, and only last for about 5 years. Now on ADER65LN GE, GE before I tried it is comfortably quiet and efficient, I do not think that it "removed pints" rating is exaggerated. It has a timer that can be used if you wish to switch off after two hours or four hours - a great feature: 1) energy saving and 2) extending the life I used the timer too. In Antonius At home, a dehumidifier is essential because the basement is an entire floor of living space - and my favorite place. Most helpful customer reviews 38 of 39 people found this review...
