Works great!
I bought this product for my son. He's eight years old and suffers from allergies. He woke up every morning sneezing, and with a stuffy nose. I was looking for an alternative to giving him allergy medication every day. We keep it on the desk, right next to his bed. It's incredibly quiet and it has helped his allergies a lot. After about a month of constant use on the medium setting, I vacuumed the filter. It was filty. I was very impressed with how much dust it pulled from the air.

The best one we've tried
Our daughter has allergies and we've tried several different air purifiers. This is by far the best we've tried. It is much quieter than others, compact size, the filter is permanent, and it works great. We are getting another one for another room.

So far, so good!
I received my item (though late, Thanks Amazon), and apparently all my research into an air cleaner has paid off. This little guy does exactly what it says and works like a charm.Here's why I bought it. I wanted an air cleaner for a medium to small sized room where I keep my cat's litter box. Normally, it doesn't smell, but about the day it's time to change it, I can smell it. Now, I don't want to smell it ever, though I keep my kitty box schedule in tact. Anyway, this air cleaner is so quiet on Whisper Mode that I literally cannot hear it. I even put it in my roommate's bedroom, just to see if she realized it was in there, before moving it to its final destination. She had no clue.The model has 3 speeds, but the Whisper Mode is fine for continuous daily use. Sure, you can turn it up, and you'll hear it's low whirrrrrr, but that's to be expected.Another reason I bought it is that it IS a HEPA quality cleaner. But I don't have to buy replacement...

Quiet and powerful air purifier with no filters to replace
I have other ionic air cleaners, as well as one that requires a filter. This air purifier is quiet and due to its compact size, can be placed off the floor on a bookcase, dresser top or top shelf which makes it optimal for space-saving and placement. I don't particularly like the noise from air filters and they have a tendency to keep me up.After spending many dollars on replacement filters and new air cleaners when the filter is no longer made or easily available, this is a welcome addition with a permanent cleanable filter. I bought two of these, one for my bedroom and one for the living room. Set on low all of the time, it is great as it just sounds like a little white noise and is not noticable most of the time. The optional ionic on and off switch, night light, as well as the automated light indicating that the filter should be cleaned is a BONUS besides the low price. So far, I am enjoying cleaner air in an old dusty house with 3 cats and 2 dogs...I have...

Gets the job done - no filters to change!
This is my 2nd air purifier - the other was a comparable model by Holmes. I learned from my first air purifier that you really have to leave it on all the time or the revolving motor will collect dust, not work as well or as quietly. If I don't want it on constantly, I just put a clean towel over the top to prevent any dust/dirt from building up.The noise level is acceptable to me, in an 8x10 room. I usually leave it on LOW, which sounds a bit like a fan on low speed, but MED is good too - it has a nice white noise effect. I only put it on HIGH if there's a bad smell or lots of dust floating around (for whatever reason). HIGH is a bit loud for my taste. This machine tends to rattle a bit as it sits on my bureau, but a small towel underneath it took care of that problem. Also, give it time to warm up when you put it on. It starts off slowly, but works at full speed within a few minutes.I have allergies and noticed a difference immediately when I got this...

quiet little air purifier
I brought this one recently to replace the sharper image's ionizer purifier, since I want something to shut off the ionizer -- the air has some smell from those ions.This unit has three speeds. Another switch to turn on or off the ionizer.The lowest speed can push enough air comparable to Sharper Image's high speed, without much noise. If no one talks in the room, you can still notice the sound. But if anyone talks or the TV is on, then you would not noticed the sound, even in a 8x10 room. Middle and high speed push 20-50 times more air than a Sharper Images ionizer purifiers. I wish it has a feature to push a button to boost the air flow to high speed for 15 minutes, then fall back to slowest speed...For the price of a tank of gasoline, and free shipping from Amazon, buying this is no brainer....

So far, so good -- and the oscillating is the best!
I decided to get this air cleaner after trying the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze and a larger Honeywell HEPA filter. At the time of purchase, the Sharper Image was the only one with a permanent filter. This was a big plus for me seeing as the older HEPA cleaners have 2 filters to replace, the larger one being nearly the price of the machine. This Honeywell tower has a permanent filter.There are many claims for and against the Ionic Breeze. I'm still undecided on how effective it is -- but I feel almost the same way about my large HEPA filter. I found myself running both of them to control my allergies. Although I cleaned them regularly and found dust on both, I can't say the air was particularly different. However, shortly after turning this on in the bedroom for the first time, I could smell a difference. I haven't had it long enough to say it's made a real dent in my allergies -- plus the fact that my allergies are intermittant -- but I'm pleased that I even notice it...

Its a great buy!
Its very sturdy and well constructed, it cleans and circulates the air through out my bedroom... The only thing I'm slightly worried about is the strange smell... Maybe I'm just used to breathing dirty moldy air**Update** Okay... The strange smell has disappeared after my first day of full use so maybe it has something to do with the purifier being brand new... I highly recommend this product because its very sturdy and the base feels weighted so theres no need to worry about it moving or falling over while it oscillates! I gave my 21 inch box fan to my friend Amanda because this device blows just as much air with hardly any noise at all, its very close to being silent... and the air feels and smells clean which really makes me happy... I mainly purchased this product because I hate vacuming... I really hate vacuming! I'm really hoping this product rids my room of dust and cuts my vacuming down to once a week...So remember... This machine is very quiet...

Pays for itself in filters
Confusion in HEPA home filters is starting to rise--I was at a local home improvement shop and they had a whole selection of machines--From True HEPA to "Hepa Type" and this one is supposedly better then "Hepa Type" but not as good as True Hepa. So for those who are allergic to everything, you may be better off with what Honeywell calls a "True Hepa."For me at least, I'm doing well with this model, and I'm relieved that I no longer have to buy 70 dollar filters for my old Honeywell machine.

What a Relief..Updated April 9, 2010
Did a lot of research looking at larger air purifiers. Winix is getting some good reviews at the allergy specialist / clean air sites.I picked up one from Amazon to place in our living area around 20x15 foot area.The unit surprised me very quiet, auto speed fan and odor detection which modulates the speed of the fan along with the plasma cleaning option (off or on).The unit will take the Winix 9000 series filter which is five stages also a big plus.The unit is super quiet on low to medium speeds and moves a lot of air. Turbo mode moves a ton of air and naturally is more noticeable noise wise.Great unit quality built a true winner in my book. I liked this unit so much after the first week I purchased another for the formal living area.Very satisfied with the product.Just a quick Update...Going on five months now both of the 5300's are performing perfectly with no problems at all. I decided to add a Rabbit Air 421A to the living area...

Lots of power!!!! WOW!!!
i bought this air purifier after i was genuinely disappointed by another one - the Surround Air Xj3000 C (check my review on that one if you wish ) and honestly i didn't expect a lot. but was i wrong...:)))) this unit is absolutely amazing - lots and lots of power, strong but yet quiet fan (you barely notice it on the first 2 settings) very nice design and as i was able to understand first hand- excellent customer service on the part of the Winix people - i had a few questions and they were all answered very promptly .When i said - "lots and lots of power " just consider this - my living room is about 400 sq.feet. there were three smokers in it puffing for a few hours. the air purifier is either on turbo mode or the third setting. all the windows and doors are closed. two friends of mine came in and they COULD NOT tell that anybody did smoke in the room!!! no smell, NADA !!!and that is about cigarette smoke - the one that stays for days and really really stinks...

Goodbye Dust! Hello FRESH air!!!
I've been researching air purifiers for awhile and finally decided to try this one out. I had been waiting on Amazon's price to become a little more competitive, but they haven't budged in months so I finally gave up and unfortunately had to buy elsewhere; I prefer to buy from Amazon Prime though because quick, safe, and easy :). This little beauty is well worth the asking price though and had I known how much I would love it I probably would hit the "add to cart" button long ago.The Winix 5300 on its lowest setting seems to be moving just as much air as my old air purifier (Bionaire) did on it's highest setting and the Winix does it whisper quiet (to be fair the Bionaire does have a lower CADR rating).The Winix is quite loud on it's highest TURBO setting, however this is unavoidable as it is moving MASSIVE amounts of air (a VERY ADMIRABLE QUALITY in an air purifier). The Turbo setting is really only intended to be used when you are not in the room anyway, or if you are...

I recommend this air cleaner
I have suffered from allergies all of my life, but especially the last few years, they have gotten progressively worse. Last year, I lived in an apartment over two chain smokers and was constantly congested. I started researching air purifiers because my medications weren't helping enough on their own. I ended up deciding on this unit for my living room/dining area, a Hamilton Beach 04163 for my bedroom, and another Hamilton Beach 04163 to go on the other side of my living room as well since the living room/dining area/kitchen was all together and not separated by doors and was too large an area for only one cleaner to handle efficiently. I have been very satisfied with this unit. I got it in December 2004 and it has not given me any problems. I have had to change the pre-filters a few times (you usually have to change them every three months or so) but have not yet had to change the HEPA filter. I like the way this system has what it calls Intellicheck which lets you know when it is...

Great for cigarette smoke,pollen,pet hair,pollen you name it.
Let me start off by saying that I suffer from being allergic to cigarette smoke and my husband and I live in an enclosed apartment complex. This is made worse by the fact that the front door doesn't seal up against the frame and smoke from the hallway leaks into our apartment with other odors and smells. Now let me add that that my husband suffers from severe allergy's and takes medicine daily for his condition. Did I mention that we have two cats and a pug. Life was miserable in our 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment, till this little puppy showed up. It's just like the picture describes it, like a barrel, the nice feature on it is the Intellicheck, this little feature tells you when to change the filters and it's quite easy the pre filters just lay on the hepa filter and are held in place by two pieces of Velcro.
