Great Electric Heater
The Lasco 5812 is a very good heater especially since it has stronger fan forced air than any other I have tried & still not loud, even stronger air flow than one costing over $90. It sends the air along the floor rather than out of the top. Moving warm air can be felt for at least 5 feet from the heater. I measured it. One serious drawback is that the thermostat even though it controls the heating of the air from a lower level of 750 watts to a high of 1500 watts, it will not cut the heater off when the thermostat setting is reached. It will only lower it to the 750 watt maintenance level. This is not a problem if the heater is located where you can turn it off yourself when the room is warm enough or the temp is too cold for it to need to shut off. Where I find a problem is in my office which is unattended for hours at a time and over night or I am away on a trip. I like to keep my computer, etc. at least 60 degrees when I am not around. Since the outside temp varies from night to...

Pretty nice little heater
I purchased this space heater because one of my coworkers has the exact same heater and it seems pretty nice. However, mine was twice as loud as hers! I don't think it's defective because it works fine. Maybe they started manufacturing them differently (hers is about 5 years old). Anyway, I couldn't use it for the office because it was just way too loud. I found a Lasko space heater that is practically silent. It's model 5367 and it's so quiet that no one knows it's even running under my desk. I highly recommend that model instead of this Boston space heater.
Sounds like a jet engine!
We use this heater in our bathrooms. We have two of them. They're quiet and heat even our large master bath. There are lots of setting, so you can get the perfect heat level. I highly recommend this item.

Effective
I've had this unit for a year. It remains fully functional and very useful as a room heater. I've dropped it a couple of times and no problems. I like the safety mechanism whereby it shuts off if not sitting on a flat surface; I'd rather not start any fires. The grill covering the heating element has small holes and therefore appears secure as far as not letting anything fly inside to cause a fire. I am not able to see any hot-red heating elements, unlike in some space heaters, which adds to the impression of safety. The heater has two warmth settings, and I mostly use the higher one and very rarely the cooler one. It also has a fan-only setting where no heat is imparted. The tall shape helps distribute the heat more evenly, I believe, as does the fact that it rotates. I rarely use the rotating function because I don't think it adds much to distributing the heat, but I don't really know since I rarely use this function. The unit is also very quiet.PROS:Price...
Buyer - do you due dilligence
This heater is what it is. It does a good job heating a 10 ft. by 10 ft. room that it well insulated when the outside temperature is 50 degrees. A bigger room (or an uninsulated room), or colder outside temperature - not so much so.A 12.5 amp (1500 watts at 120 volts) heater just isn't going to heat a 400 sq. ft. uninsulated room to the point where you have to strip down to your skivvies. But if you've got a 100 to 144 sq. ft. room that your central furnace doesn't keep as warm as the rest of the house, this should do you fine.
THIS UNIT DOES NOT HAVE A THERMOSTAT
Soleus Air # HC7-15-01 does NOT have a thermostat. The description in Amazon says it does and that is wrong. The cost to ship this back is too high, so we will keep this unit for use in our barn work area. It's a shame that we have to keep a product that was described wrong. The unit looks like it would be great if it had a thermostat as described.

Nordic Pure 20x25x5 Furnace Air Filters
We had our furnace replaced last year and had a Lennox SLP98V 98% efficiency unit installed because it wasn't much more than the lower efficiency rated units. Wow, what a difference the furnace made in our monthly gas bills, they dropped by quite a bit which will more than make up the difference of saving money by getting a lower efficiency unit.Enough about our furnace, this review is about the Air Filter. I looked up the price on the Lennox X6675 replacement filters and they linger around $100 each which I thought was a bit much. A quick search on Amazon showed these Nordic Pure filters at less than a 1/4 of the cost vs. the Lennox and they had good reviews so I thought I'd give them a try.The first thing I noticed is that the original Lennox is a MERV 16 filter while these Nordic Pure filters are MERV 12. If you're not an HVAC guy, like me, then you would not have a clue what this meant, so a quick internet search showed me the difference between the...
A very nice filter at a very nice price.
I was very pleased with this filter and would purchase anytime over the recommended Bryant and 3M filters. The quality is just as good (if not better) and the price was lower.
Replaces a Honeywell filter
I purchased this box of 2 filters to replace our original Honeywell filter. The cost of the two Nordic Pure was so much less than the replacement quote I received (for one Honeywell) at a local Heat and A/C supply store ($125 per filter - in west Texas) that I was looking forward to comparing the Nordic Pure with our original filter. Upon arrival, other than the brand name, the filters looked to be identical. In fact, the Nordic Pure were a slight upgrade in MERV rating from my original filter. After two months of use we are completely satisfied with our purchase.

What a deal
I spent quite a bit of time researching A/C before purchasing. We live in Oregon and it doesn't get too hot but there's a month or two in the summer where the heat and humidity get oppressive in the house. I wanted an inexpensive, small, window A/C to increase the comfort. I wanted something small enough that I can store it the other 10 months. So, after much research I ordered this model. I was going to get the 6K BTU model with the electronic controls but I figured I would get something super cheap and if it didn't work I could use it as a single room cooler. Shipped free which makes this a pretty good deal. Arrived in about a week.Installation was easy, following the instructions in the manual. I did have to install and remove the A/C about 3 times to get all the sealing right. In the box there's a lot of different thicknesses of foam and foam tape. There is no specific instructions about what to do with this, except the stuff for the top gap of the...
Rises Above Expactations
I got it hoping it would keep my apartment cool-ER. I expected it to keep it comfortable, not cold. I also had a bit of a problem with size. The only window that opens in my house is a vertical sliding window, which Air Conditioners I can afford, aren't made for.Once I received it, I started to assemble and install. Originally I was going to leave the extensions off, since my window was only 18 inches wide, but after I got it and thought about it more, I realized they could still help keep it supported. So I put them on. They are about an inch inside the window, to help it from falling out. Also, I originally hoped to buy some wood and put that above it, but once I saw how sturdy it was with just the extensions, I put cardboard above it and plastic taped around the edges with duct tape. Very red neck, I know. It's sealed with the help of some other bits that came with it to help seal it.I installed it a little over 12 hours ago and my home is cold. I live in a house above...
Better than expected!
I bought this a/c mainly because of the price. It has completely exceeded my expectations. It is cooling three rooms in the downstairs of our house (about 600 sq ft). And I have yet to change it over to "high cool". It's also quieter than I expected. Well worth it's low price!

How long does it take for a homemade solar air heater to raise temperature 5 degrees?

Jan 24, 2010 by Strawberry J.A.M | Posted in Engineering

I made a solar air heater out of 30 cans, and a 18"x 24" frame. It's due tomorrow and I can't do it today so on average, how long does it take to raise indoor heating 5 degrees higher?

It depends on the indore volume and the ambient temperature.

Why isn't my forced air heater pushing air to the vents?

Dec 15, 2007 by mike p | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs

My forced hot air heater stopped pushing air to the vents in my house yesterday.
The oil is still burning, the unit itself is hot, but the vents and duct work are all cold.
Nobody's messed with it, so it has to be something wrong with

You should hear your burner unit go on, then you should hear your blower kick on. If your blower isn't kicking on at all, the blower motor is shot and you need a new one. If it's humming with no air blowing, shut the power off, clean it, and lubricate

Business Builder: Go Green and Reduce Taxes

Tax credits—direct reductions of an operation’s tax bills as opposed to a “deduction” that merely reduces the annual tax bill—are not the only tax-related benefits for achieving energy efficiency, of course. Solar credits landed an eight-year extension for an existing 30-percent tax credit for residential and commercial solar installations, while a $2,000 cap for deducting the cost of installing these systems was removed. The so-called “green buildings” tax credit is an important incentive offered to pet product retailers, suppliers and manufacturers under U. S. federal tax laws. Additionally, the wind-energy industry received a one-year extension of the production tax credit that many believe will help it reach new levels of growth in 2009. Last year, as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA), several energy-related tax credits were extended.
