Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy

well, it IS what you love about Domino...but nothing new

Brilliant!
More often that not decorating books are just eye candy; after read them once you are satisfied but done. This is NOT the case with domino's first book. The domino team has managed to create a book that you will keep reading it again and again. It is simply brilliant!Even though I have kept every issue of domino and go through them regularly, the book's format allows for a deeper approach to domino's mission. They have really worked hard to make the book into a usable tool. With more than just pretty pictures and stories, this book provides a framework for how to think about putting together a room (and yes their is new content).I am only disappointed in two ways: 1, I wish the book referenced the issue each in which each room originally appeared and/or provided information about the products in each room. Perhaps there was not enough space, but access to information is one of my favorite parts of domino's monthly. 2, They also overlooked closets as room. And...

Tutorial with Photos on Decorating
Today we apartment and home dwellers want to be involved in decorating our homes. But we need to be informed on an abundance of topics to do so. This is an affordable "how-to" book that breaks the process down room-by-room with hundreds of ideas, and photos to illustrate the ideas, on how to create a room. It's great for those new to the process and those who are looking for ideas they haven't considered before.Ten design basics are introduced for each room: living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, offices, entries etc. Then, examples of popular styles of the room (playful chic, nature inspired, urban modern etc.) are illustrated along with a possible color palette for each room, important room elements are highlighted and our favorite before-and-afters of the room are shown. Three common flaws and three suggested fixes are covered for rooms. "Style made simple" regarding rooms covers topics like curtains, storage, headboards etc. Scattered throughout are short "try...
This book's a keeper!
Better Homes & Gardens has come out with another fantastic decorating book. I love this book because it is FILLED with tons of ideas for every budget and design style. I am an interior designer, blogger and decorative painter so I am constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration. I have already read this book cover to cover at least three times and still I find something new that catches my eye. I highly recommend if you can only buy one decorating book a year, this is the one! Also if you missed the last BH&G New Decorating Book, do yourself a favor and find it.
Exciting Decorating Ideas
I purchased this book, sight unseen, counting on the good reputation of Better Homes and Gardens. I am completely delighted with it. Every page is a full color example of wonderful interior decorating ideas. The book is divided by rooms and purposes. I delight in just paging through it and imagining all these creative ideas in my own home. I HIGHLY recommend this book for the interior decorating enthusiast.

Very Helpful for the Clueless!
I can only speak on behalf of myself, who is a completely clueless when it comes to decorating a home! I have always lived with others in apartments or school dorms, so I never had a say on home decor. Now, in the process of buying my first home, I am completely lost as to how to decorate it and what to buy! I love entertaining and I love having visitors over. I love color and I love beautiful furniture... if it wasnt for this book, I'm sure I would have gotten tons of different focal points and tons of splashes of color (I was color deprived when I was young!). This book helps you organize your thoughts mentally, and helps when you are starting off with a clean canvas. I say it's helpful for the clueless because it is of tremendous help to me (very clueless!). I'm not sure how helpful it will be if you already have ideas about home decorating! It's also pretty modern (I'm 24) if that is the direction you are looking towards. The last section is also really cool! It has...
Wonderful, create tips for those that like to "invent"
I purchased this book because I wanted some unique ideas in an easy to read format and sure enough, this is what I was given!!! I love it!!! It is FULL of pictures which makes it easy for my husband to flip through and say like it/hate it....and that brings a huge grin to my face ;-) Oh, we relocate every three to four years (nope, not a military family) and we ALWAYS have new places and spaces. This gives great advice on using what you have and really adding speacial pieces.
a supremely useful book on home decoration and design
This book is perfect for the beginning home owner or renter who doesn't know where to begin in making decisions about how to decorate their home. The book has material you can't find elsewhere on layout, types of sofas, chairs, beds, rooms etc. The rooms are contemporary, up-to-date and fresh. The book has useful charts and questionnaires which will help the reader in decision-making and it's very clear and easy to read. It's a wonderful springboard to begin to articulate your personal style. I teach a class on interior design through continuing education and find the book very useful for students as an introduction to a complex subject like interior design.

Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well

Really Nice
The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well by Deborah Needleman is a terrific resource for home decorators. Needleman writes that the point of decorating is to "create the background for the best life you can live." As a designer myself, I fully agree with this sentiment. This book is the opposite of what a staged home would be like...(staging is when one creates a home to appeal to all and depersonalizes it.)According to Needleman, one does not decorate simply to have a home look good...one decorates to feel comfortable, to fit ones lifestyle--functionality, and to feel good in. "Decorating improves ones life!" She claims. The reader is asked to decide what you want your home to do--what functions should it serve? Next, how does your home make you feel? With this information, you are guided in furniture and styling to make your home work best for you.The goal is to make your home personal and comfortable and highly...
De-lightful, De-licious, De-lovely
This book is as refreshing and lilting as a Cole Porter song. The tone of it is a great mix of what the author loves best in design, and writes about: it's light, welcoming, chatty, quirky, comfortable, insouciant, cozy, glamorous, festive, personal and has a sense of history. For design aficionados, it may read like a good novel. The winsome watercolors by Virginia Johnson add to the quirky charm of this book. They are frame-worthy and would be lovely on the walls of a reading corner, guest room or small bathroom. The watercolors of rooms are appealing the way a painting of a loved one is appealing in place of a photograph. You may enjoy guessing which rooms by designers the illustrations are capturing. The star here is the text--the pointed point of view of the author Deborah Needleman who was founder of one of the most original design magazines DOMINO and is now Editor in Chief of WSJ MAGAZINE. If all design is opinion, she's got one; it has been informed...
A big disappointment
I love Deborah Needleman and pre-ordered this book. But it was actually pretty disappointing. The text isn't too bad since there are a few useful hints here and there, but the illustrations dragged down the entire book. The illustrations in this book aren't even quite like illustrations you find in early Mark Hampton and Charlotte Moss books. These are very loose, impressionistic watercolors of imaginary rooms (though some were copied from real rooms) and vignettes that really don't convey anything and are probably only meant to eat up white space. I wish there were actual photos were you could see textiles, textures, etc. -- all the things that tie into the text and make a decorating book worthwhile. Also, the illustrations -- page after page after page -- really became very cloying.I don't think I would've bought this book had I known how incredibly mediocre it would be.

Eclectic design trends breathe new life into your room

A floor like Quick-Step 's new Reclaime flooring in Heathered Oak serves as a pleasing canvas to create your eclectic room design, while also adding an attractive level of style and artistry to a room. This floor gives the same visuals and charm of a hardwood floor constructed from reclaimed, vintage wood which adds depth and personality to the room. "Grey toned floors are the latest design trend and they open up the possibilities for a wide range of decorating styles and color palettes. "A good strategy when designing an eclectic room is to start with a neutral colored floor to help tie all the elements together," says Valencich. With such a bevy of decor options, an eclectic room can easily turn chaotic. floors not only ground the room, but they provide the design foundation. Eclectic style can include a variety of periods and styles and is connected through the use of color, texture, shape and finish.
